Sedimentary Processes Within the Canadian Arctic Archipelago: Relationships Among Sedimentological, Geochemical, and Magnetic Sediment Properties

چکیده
The sedimentological, geochemical, physical and magnetic properties of 40 surface basal sediment samples box cores collected throughout the Canadian Arctic Archipelago (CAA) from Beaufort Shelf to Lancaster Sound were analyzed determine sedimentary processes that operate within CAA during pre- post-industrial periods (i.e., before after 1900 Common Era or CE). In addition, chronology seven selected regional was established using 210Pb measurements, where base is dated between 1550 1820 CE. These provide an opportunity robustly compare post-1900 conditions with those colder Little Ice Age period (LIA; ∼1500–1900 different combined multivariate statistical analyses result in identification three provinces distinct characteristics: (a) West province (Mackenzie Shelf/Slope, west Banks Island M'Clure Strait) typified by detrital associations (Fe-Rb-Ti-Zn), high organic matter inputs, dominance magnetite low-coercivity minerals aluminosilicate contents; (b) Intermediate Zone (Amundsen Coronation gulfs) distinguished Si-Al-Zr-Sr-K associations, Mn oxyhydroxides precipitation, constant grain concentrations a mixture marine terrigenous matter; (c) East Province (Queen Maud Gulf, Victoria Barrow straits, Eclipse sounds) described carbonate matter, high-coercivity pre-industrial samples. Our results confirm dynamics are controlled supplies river discharges provinces, whereas more influenced sea ice coastal erosion. Basal 210Pb-dated suggest intensification Mackenzie, Coppermine, Ellice rivers runoff, extensive sea-ice cover consequently transport latter LIA period.

Benthic macroinfaunal community structure, resource utilisation and trophic relationships in two Canadian Arctic Archipelago polynyas
Climate change driven alterations to patterns of Arctic marine primary production, with increasing phytoplankton- and decreasing ice algal production, have the potential to change the resource utilisation and trophic structure of the benthic communities relying on the algae for food. To predict the benthic responses to dietary changes, we studied the macroinfaunal community compositions, and us...
متن کاملLimnological and sedimentary processes at Sawtooth Lake, Canadian High Arctic, and their influence on varve formation
This paper synthesizes data collected to document the modern limnological and sedimentary processes in South Sawtooth Lake located on northern Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, Canada. Field observations show that the finely laminated sediments deposited in the distal basin are formed by the settling of overflows and interflows, and in rare occasions, by non-erosive hyperconcentrated density flows. Th...
متن کاملNew vascular plant records for the Canadian Arctic Archipelago
The Canadian Arctic Archipelago is a vast region of approximately 1,420,000 km(2), with a flora characterized by low species diversity, low endemicity, and little influence by alien species. New records of vascular plant species are documented here based on recent fieldwork on Victoria and Baffin Islands; additional records based on recent literature sources are mentioned. This paper serves as ...
متن کاملProjected Polar Bear Sea Ice Habitat in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago
BACKGROUND Sea ice across the Arctic is declining and altering physical characteristics of marine ecosystems. Polar bears (Ursus maritimus) have been identified as vulnerable to changes in sea ice conditions. We use sea ice projections for the Canadian Arctic Archipelago from 2006 - 2100 to gain insight into the conservation challenges for polar bears with respect to habitat loss using metrics ...
متن کاملEstimating sea ice area flux across the Canadian Arctic Archipelago using enhanced AMSR-E
[1] Enhanced resolution Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E) imagery is used to estimate daily sea ice area fluxes between the Canadian Arctic Archipelago and the Arctic Ocean and Baffin Bay for the period September 2002 to June 2007. Over the period, Amundsen Gulf and M’Clure Strait exported 54 10 km of sea ice area or roughly 77 km of sea ice volume each year into the Arctic Ocean....
